Melissa officinalis is a perennial herb that originates from countries east of the Mediterranean Sea. In our country, bee grass is found in shady places, especially in plain areas. It is a very aromatic plant and if we rub it between our hands, it smells like lemon. The ancient Greeks have used bee herb since 2000 years ago.

At that time, bee grass was a herbal remedy in honor of the goddess Diana. In the Middle Ages, bee herb was used to treat wounds, toothaches, dog bites, sprained necks, and vomiting during pregnancy. Legend has it that bee grass was also used against hair loss.

Bee herb is known as melissa officinalis or lemon balm. Over the years, bee herb has also been used against bronchitis, fever, headaches, blood pressure, virosis, mood disorders, tremors, vomiting and toothaches. In folk medicine, bee grass leaves also cure menstrual cramps.

The dried leaves of the lemon balm plant contain 0.06-0.8% essential oil, which contains monoterpene aldehydes. The leaves contain up to 6% of the flow of hydroxycinnamic acid (rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid), monoterpenic glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, etc. The amount and composition of volatile oil depends on the origin, climate, year and cut, among others.

Properties

In Albania, bee grass is also known as milce, mickel in the areas of Kruja, ereza, pselik in the areas of Berat and spelinok as it is known in Korça. This herb is still used today against nervous irritations, problems with insomnia, digestion and urinary spasms. The essential oils of bee grass contain substances that relax the muscles, especially the bladder, stomach, uterus.

Prominent European scientific organizations cite bee herb’s abilities to internally cure mood swings, anxiety, digestive problems and cold sores when applied externally. The use of bee herb as a tea has also received the German license to be used against sleep disorders, curing problems in the gastrointestinal tract and stimulating the appetite.

Bee grass is consumed as tea, but its leaves can also be added to salads and consumed fresh. The plant has mild, soothing and antispasmodic properties. It also helps soothe the gastrointestinal tract from bloating, inflammation and gas. It is worth noting that the plant also helps to stimulate the production of digestive enzymes by the liver, thus helping the digestion of food. Bee grass eases stool and helps remove mold in the intestines.

Anxiety treatment
Bee herb has a powerful calming effect on the nervous system. “We use it extensively in many diseases related to the nervous system. So far, the plant has given many results, especially in calming people who often get nervous. It has resulted in the removal of anxiety and acute stress. It is very effective in migraine headaches.

All individuals who have tried it are extremely satisfied, as this plant works better than medications for this disease. Recommended use
The daily dose of dried and chopped bee grass leaves is 1.5-4.5 g. The tea is prepared by adding 1 tablespoon of leaves to 2 cups of boiling water, leave for 10 minutes, drink 2 times a day.
